Meditation 101: How and Why to Meditate

Meditation is a simple yet life-transforming practice that has innumerous physical, mental and spiritual benefits. I first started meditating regularly three to four years ago and although it’s not something I do regularly, it has had such a positive impact on my life.

Like most people do, I used to think that meditation was only for those who wanted to be on a spiritual path and the idea of just closing your eyes and not thinking thoughts seemed boring to me. In fact, the first few times I meditated, I don’t think I felt much of a difference and it took many sessions before I could actually clear my mind of thoughts and just be in the moment.

But I’m so glad I didn’t give up and stuck to it because meditation has changed my life in more ways than I could have imagined. If you’re on the fence about giving meditation a shot, here’s a list of a few incredible benefits of meditating:

I’ve been trying to be regular and meditate more lately, so I thought I’d make a video for anyone who’s considering starting meditation. I hope this video helps you start.

Here are just a few tips if you’re new to meditation:

  1. Try to pick a convenient time to meditate. It is essentially a time for you to relax so if you’re not a morning person like I am, there’s no pressure to do it in the morning. Pick whatever time works best for you.
  2. Just like a convenient time, choose a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. It’s hard enough to try not to be distracted with your own thoughts, so make sure you avoid external distractions.
  3. Since meditation is about relaxing and calming yourself, it’s important you sit in a comfortable posture. The right posture while meditating is to sit straight with your spine erect and your neck and shoulders relaxed. If you’d prefer lying down instead, that’s fine too (as long as you don’t fall asleep while meditating).
  4. Try not to meditate with an empty or full stomach because that might be a little distracting.
  5. If you’re just starting off, it might help to do a guided meditation or have some relaxing music playing in the background. You could make use of the many meditation apps out there. My favorites are Headspace and Zenfriend.
  6. When you’re just starting off, meditate for 5 to 10 minutes and you can work your way up from there.
  7. Lastly, and most importantly, don’t try to fight the thoughts that pop up in your head. It’s very normal for your mind to wander while meditating so instead of trying to stop the thoughts, just let them be, smile, and simply return to focusing on your breath.

With regular practice, I’m sure you’ll not only start enjoying meditating but also start to experience its positive benefits in your life. All it takes is a few minutes a day to change your life.
